Aggressiveness in Psychotic Patients :Psychopathological Thery and Clinical Management

Aggressiveness in psychotic patients is an importantissue in psychiatric care.  This paper reviews the theoretical basis of the psychopathology and the clinical management of aggressive behavior in psychotic patients. The areas of psychopathology covered include definitions and explanatory theories of aggressive behaviorand related topics of suicidal behavior, anger and impulsivity. The areas of clinical-practice covered include the key points of initial assessment, acute, and long-term management of psychotic patients with aggressive behavior. Clinical guidelines for management of aggressive behavior in psychotic patients that are based on physical, psycho-pharmacological or a psychosocial approach are described. Several myths regarding management of aggressive behaviors including overstatement of psychoanalytic theory and neglect of behaviorism are explained. Plausible study approaches and methodological issues of research about aggressive behavior in psychotic patients are also discussed and suggested. These understandings of psychotic patients' aggressive behavior are important for developing effective prevention and treatment programs.
